Cynthia Germanotta and her daughter are teaming up for the Emotion Revolution we all want and need.
The 29-year-old’s Born This Way Foundation is partnering with Yale University to launch the Emotion Revolution, which aims to build awareness about how emotions affect young people and to bridge the gap between how people feel and how they WANT to feel.In a new essay for The Daily Beast, Gaga’s mom and Born This Way Foundation president, Cynthia Germanotta, opened up about the initiative while also sharing details about her daughter’s painful childhood.
“When my daughter Stefani—who most people know as Lady Gaga—was a child, she had to learn painful lessons about the dangers of cruelty and the importance of kindness,” Germanotta wrote. “She was creative and unequivocally her own person, but her peers didn’t always appreciate the things that made her unique—and different. As a result, they would sometimes taunt, humiliate, or exclude her. It was hurtful for her to experience and heartbreaking for me to watch.”
Germanotta went on to explain that the bullying weakened Gaga’s confidence, made her question her self-worth, and led to “anxiety, depression, and destructive behavior.” However, as she points out, those same struggles have since allowed Gaga to connect with her army of “Little Monsters” and have made her the role model we all know today.
In a video released earlier this month, Gaga expanded on the same sentiment, explaining that she feels a special bond with her fans and wants to create a “braver world where all voices are heard and all feelings are respected.”
“I know what it’s like to feel depressed, to feel humiliated, to feel isolated, and I know too many people that, no matter who they are, where they come from, they’re feeling the same way that I do,” Gaga said. “It was so beautiful in a way that our sadness bonded us at the shows and I so badly wanted to understand why that cloud was there at all.”
The Emotion Revolution is kicking off with anationwide survey for high school-age youth, the data from which will be used to “build positive environments for young people and… equip them with the emotional tools they need to lead happy, healthy, and productive lives,” Germanotta wrote. She and her daughter will both be on hand to present the findings at Yale in October.
