Before songs become major hits, they often take interesting journeys. That was certainly the case with Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money,” which actually began as a beat in producer Deputy’s apartment.
From there, “BBHMM” took shape during a studio session with singer/songwriter Bibi Bourelly. “[Bibi] went in the booth and started freestyling,” the Brooklyn-based producer said in an interview with MTV News on Thursday. “I believe the first words were ‘Bitch better have my money.’ I instantly said, ‘Yo, that’s it.'”
After working on the song, Deputy says he knew it would be perfect for Rih Rih. “I was like, ‘This is definitely something that Rihanna needs to sing,’” Deputy recalled. “We was trying to figure out who could do it because Bibi killed it. Not anyone could just sing this record.”
As luck would have it, Bourelly later had a studio session with Rihanna and Kanye West. That’s where Rih first heard the song’s reference track. “Once Bibi pressed play, that was it,” Deputy explained. “Kanye heard it and was like, ‘Yo, this is dope.’ Rih heard it and was like, ‘This is dope.’”
Before Rihanna finalized the track, however, it also underwent some changes.
“’Ye felt that it needed a change and I guess Travi$ Scott and Wondagurl added the little piece in the second part,” Deputy opened up about the track’s production process. “I thought it was cool. I didn’t have any negative feelings to it. Rih loved it and it was really about what she wants.”
Fans loved it, too. It’s become just the latest hit in Rihanna’s celebrated discography. And it adds to the singer’s legacy, according to Deputy. “I think it’s edgy,” he said. “She already is edgy but it’s like a gritty, dirty sound. She’s always expressed confidence, right? But this is in-your-face confidence.
“Her range is so wide,” he continued. “I think this record fits right in with everything that she has and actually takes it up a notch a little bit in terms of the confidence and cockiness that she exudes as an artist.”
When it was released, the buzz-worthy song also resulted in some controversy. According to Billboard, singer/rapper Just Brittany’s fans claimed Rihanna’s single was too similar to the artist’s “Betta Have My Money” cut. So, how does Deputy respond to those claims?
“I really didn’t wanna shed light on it, but what I would say is I don’t understand how you can steal a phrase like ‘bitch better have my money,’” he openly questioned. “I don’t understand how a phrase that’s so general and popular already in the culture can be stolen.”
Controversy aside, “BBHMM” has fans wondering if we’ll be seeing more from Deputy and Rihanna in the future. So, what are the chances they’ll reunite for another banger? “I can’t really say, but potentially,” he answered. “We’ll wait and see.”
